After honoring the late French icon Brigitte Bardot, pop star Chapel Lawn has come to terms with the controversial beliefs she held.
In response to Bardot’s passing, Rohan expressed admiration for her as a significant influence on her song “Red Wine Supernova.”
“She was my inspiration for Red Wine Supernova,” Roan shared on her Instagram Story, accompanied by a heart emoji. “Mr. Bardo, please rest in peace.”
Notably, the song kicks off with the line, “She was a playboy, Brigitte Bardot/She taught me things I didn’t know.”
However, fans quickly criticized Bardot. They highlighted her opposition to mass immigration in France and her support for Marine Le Pen in the presidential elections, along with her activism for animal rights. She was also known for multiple convictions for inciting racial hatred and her controversial remarks about the #MeToo movement back in 2018.
“Mr. Chapel Lawn, you might want to check Brigitte Bardot’s Wikipedia page,” one user commented on social media.
Another added, “Chapel Lawn claims to be inspired by Bardot, who is often labeled one of the most notorious racists and homophobes. Isn’t that surprising?”
Another comment noted, “It’s amusing that Chapel Lawn was unaware of the deeply problematic aspects of Bardot’s legacy.”
In light of this backlash, Rohan reconsidered her tribute to the French figure.
“My goodness, I had no clue about the madness Mr. Bardo represented,” Roan expressed on her Instagram stories on Monday. “I will not stand for this. I’m truly sorry to find out.”
Some individuals came to Bardot’s defense, as reported by other outlets.
“Is it reasonable to expect everyone to know every detail about a celebrity’s past?” questioned one person online. “Chappell mentioned Bardot’s inspiration for her song was more about pop culture influence rather than her controversial views.”
Additionally, another said, “I really don’t think Chapel Lawn deserves to be criticized over Bardot’s past, especially without full awareness of it.”
More discussions have emerged around this situation, prompting a variety of opinions.
