Popular Center-Left Writer Spreads Disturbing Falsehood About Charlie Kirk

Heather Cox Richardson’s Controversial Claims

Heather Cox Richardson, a prominent historian with a large following of over 2.6 million subscribers on Substack, made some alarming assertions regarding Charlie Kirk’s alleged assassin, Tyler Robinson, in a post on Sunday. Richardson, known for her centrist-left newsletter that resonates with mainstream liberals, is a history professor at Boston University, often participating in discussions on shows like “Morning Joe.”

On that day, she propagated an unsubstantiated claim about Robinson, who is accused of being involved in Kirk’s murder. She stated, “The shooter wasn’t someone from the left. Tyler Robinson, a suspected murderer, is a young Republican gun enthusiast from a family that appears to lean far right.”

Richardson also criticized right-wing narratives surrounding Kirk’s death, suggesting they distract from reality. She mentioned that Robinson once characterized himself as “radical” in college, but it was later disclosed that his university attendance was limited to just one semester.

Concerningly, a recent YouGov poll indicated that a notable percentage of Americans mistakenly believe Robinson is tied to the Republican Party. However, officials including Utah Governor Spencer Cox have suggested that he is instead influenced by leftist ideology. One bullet recovered by authorities reportedly bore the phrase, “Hey fascist! Catch!”

The poll revealed that 24% of adults think Robinson is a Republican, while 21% identified him as a Democrat. Additionally, 15% of respondents were unsure about his political affiliations, and 40% had no clear opinion on the matter.

Interestingly, Robinson’s family has observed his growing political activity and increasing hostility in recent years. Reports suggest he lived with his transgender boyfriend, Lance Twiggs, who allegedly has sentiments against conservatives and Christians, according to family members who spoke to various media outlets.

Despite the gravity of the story, Richardson has not acknowledged these complexities in her narrative, raising questions about the impact of her influential platform. It’s one thing for an anonymous individual to spread unverified claims online, but for someone with her reach to overlook crucial information about the background of a person accused of such serious actions feels significant.
