Artist Honors Charlie Kirk with Portrait

A Mississippi artist recently gained attention for a portrait of Charlie Kirk, which was displayed prominently at a memorial event seen by millions. Known as Sam Ryan on social media, he has amassed a following of a million. His studio, Sam Ryan Studios, creates works that often reflect themes of prayer and introspection.

In the painting, Kirk is depicted with his hands clasped thoughtfully. The serious expression on his face is complemented by patriotic colors—red, black, white, and blue. Just two days before Kirk’s 32nd birthday, Ryan mentioned that he had spoken to Kirk privately the previous year.

Ryan’s painting of former President Donald Trump, created after a July 13, 2024, incident, had already gained traction online. Notably, Kirk reached out to Ryan about this painting, eager to have it for his studio.

After Kirk’s tragic assassination on September 10, Ryan felt compelled to honor his memory. “I wanted to serve him,” he commented, explaining that he aimed to create something lasting for the community to appreciate. He based the portrait on a photo of Kirk in prayer alongside Dan Fruett.

Ryan persevered through a grueling 12-hour overnight session to complete the piece. He shared it online at 8 a.m. on September 11, hoping to honor Kirk and his family.

However, his tribute wasn’t without controversy. Following the release of the portrait, Ryan lost a significant number of followers—44,000 on Instagram and over 100,000 across various platforms. He has faced hostile messages and threats in the aftermath.

In spite of the backlash, Ryan has also found a supportive audience among like-minded individuals. He reflected on his connection to Kirk, stressing that his work was not a political statement but rather a personal tribute.

Ryan traveled from Mississippi to Arizona for Kirk’s memorial service on September 21, which he described as a bittersweet milestone in his career. He noted how Kirk’s struggle resonated with the broader themes of truth and persecution faced by those who challenge the status quo.

Amid the challenges, Ryan remains committed to his mission. He hopes that his art encourages others to seek goodness and faith in the world. He plans to display the portrait at Turning Point USA’s headquarters and will offer limited signed prints for sale soon.
