Popular GOP governor’s Dem challenger revealed in deep-blue state’s primary

Democrat Esther Charleston was announced as the winner of Vermont’s gubernatorial primary on Tuesday night, setting her up to face off against the heavily Democratic state’s Republican governor.

The election was won by Charlestine, an educator and first-generation Haitian American, who defeated computer scientist Peter Duval on Tuesday.

The current governor, Republican Phil Scott, is a four-term governor and is not facing an opponent in the primary.

Charleston has received endorsements from Democrats including former Gov. Howard Dean, Lt. Gov. David Zuckerman and Burlington Mayor Emma Mulvaney Stanak.

Duvall, a former Underhill campaign committee member, said on his website before the election that he “expects to lose this election,” but said a vote for him would raise the profile of environmental issues in state politics, and urged Republicans and progressives to put his name in their party’s primary ballot.

The Squad will contest its final primary elections on Tuesday, with four states voting.

Despite being a Republican governor in a heavily Democratic state, Scott remains popular, winning 69% of the vote in the 2022 general election.

Scott, a critic of Republican Donald Trump and supporter of former U.N. ambassador Nikki Haley for president, said he was among the 66 percent of Vermont voters who voted for Democrat Joe Biden in 2020.
