Porch pirate walks up to FedEx driver, claims he’s homeowner, wants package — but wise driver steps up, flips script on crook

A FedEx driver in Florida stopped a porch pirate from stealing a homeowner's delivery last week, police said.

Doorbell video posted online shows a man approaching a FedEx driver as he was standing on the porch of a Hialeah home on Friday. WPLG-TV reported..

“The FedEx driver had already taken pictures of his vehicle and license plate,” Hialeah Police Lt. Eddie Rodriguez told WPLG. “We're interested to know if this individual has been involved in any other package thefts within the city of Hialeah.”

Police say the man claimed to be the homeowner and wanted to receive a package containing a new iPhone.

However, the unidentified driver was not so easily fooled and asked the man for proof of his identity, police said.

Full video of the doorbell camera Only DadeThe FedEx driver saw the man walking up the driveway toward the house and said, “No. Who are you? No, open the door.”

But the male continued walking towards the front door and, when the driver held up his cell phone, presumably to record a video or take a photo, he suddenly stopped, turned around and walked away.

“You don't know,” the driver can be heard saying, before adding to the man: “I'm calling the police.”

WPLG said the home's real owner, who asked to only give his first name, Anthony, watched the scene from a remote location.

Suddenly, the homeowner can be heard asking, “Hey! What's going on?” and the driver follows the man back up the driveway, at which point the FedEx driver yells, “We've got you!”

The driver then ran up the driveway yelling “Hey!” and back to the front door, where he knocked on the door to alert the householder to a man who had been “trying to steal” the delivery.

Anthony told WPLG the driver told the man, “If you live here, open your door and show me your ID and I'll give you my cell phone.”

The man was seen fleeing the scene in a red Hyundai, according to the sheriff's office.

“The FedEx driver had already taken pictures of his vehicle and license plate,” Hialeah Police Lt. Eddie Rodriguez told WPLG. “We're interested to know if this individual has been involved in any other package thefts within the city of Hialeah.”

FedEx released a statement to the police department that read in part, “The safety of our customers' packages is our top priority, and we appreciate the carrier's swift action to ensure packages were delivered to their intended recipients. We encourage any customers who believe their packages have been stolen to contact their local law enforcement immediately.”

Police are investigating and are asking anyone with information to contact them, WPLG reported.
