Portland Fire Unveils New Jerseys Amidst WNBA Offseason Uncertainty
The WNBA offseason has been quite unusual this year, with a canceled schedule and ongoing CBA negotiations. In the midst of this, the Portland Fire has introduced their new jerseys, becoming one of the new teams joining the league alongside the Toronto Tempo next season.
Last month, the Toronto Tempo released their jerseys, and the Fire has followed suit with similar editions, namely the Explorer and Heroine. When the Golden State team debuted their jerseys ahead of the 2025 WNBA season, they initially had just two editions. There’s also a possibility of a Rebel edition coming later.
As is tradition, each WNBA team features an Explorer jersey that highlights its home city. The Fire’s version features a straightforward red base, prominently displaying “Portland” on the front.
For the Heroine jersey, it typically comes in white, showcasing the team’s name. In this case, the white jersey displays “Fire” across the chest.
The team has also introduced a “PDX” logo, which hints at what might appear on future Rebel Edition jerseys. They explained the inspiration behind the logo in a press release:
The “P” and “D” shapes are influenced by the Willamette River that flows through Portland, symbolizing strength and connection. The bottom of the “D” acknowledges PDX as a celebrated locale and the team’s debut in 2026. The “X” is designed to reflect Portland’s spirit, pride, and personal expression.
The overall design of the jersey leans towards simplicity. The font used in both jersey editions cleverly ties back to the “thorn” feature from the Fire’s rose emblem, as Portland is known as the City of Roses. While it could have been interesting to incorporate a bolder flame element, the design opts for a more abstract flame pattern on the side. Given the team colors are red and white, there’s a limit to how adventurous the design can go, but it does end up looking a bit… basic?
Yet, that aligns with current fashion trends. The aim of these jerseys is to be comfy and easy to wear. Fans from Toronto might appreciate that Portland’s jerseys are less cluttered with advertising compared to what Tempo sported, which stirred a lot of discussions when their jerseys were retired last December.
