25 minutes: Camavinga hit a low shot down the right wing for France, giving Pepe a rather harsh penalty. Griezmann smashed a free kick into the box. It was no big deal and was easily cleared. There was still no excitement in this game.
24th minute: Ronaldo and Hernandez compete for the ball on Portugal’s right wing and accidentally bump heads. Luckily, both are able to play on. “Tell Eric Pederson there are two solutions to the Fox problem: the mute button and TUDN (unfortunately not available in this game),” Joe Pearson wrote. “But he and Aaron Timms are right: Fox suck.”
22 minutes: Costa was involved in the goal again, smashing home Mbappé’s cross from a tight angle on the left wing, before Vitinha smashed it clear and scored. A fine run from Mbappé gave him his first major contribution of the game, as he outmaneuvered Joao Cancelo.
20 min: …But France pressed forward down the other side, with Hernandez cutting in from the left and curling a low shot towards goal that was cleared by Diogo Costa, Portugal’s hero against Slovenia.
19 minutes: Kolo Muani and Koundé combine to attack as winger Rafael Leão roams down the left wing, but they can’t stop Leão winning a corner kick. Koundé heads the set piece clear. It’s been a good few minutes for Portugal.
17 min: …But Portugal hit back again. Bruno Fernandes’ low shot deflected wide to the right for a corner. Ronaldo over-pressed and the whistle blew for a set-piece. The pressure was gone!
15 minutes: Maignan nearly tripped while dealing with a simple backpass and flicked the ball away for a corner – fortunate for him as Bruno Fernandes’ pass was poor once again and the keeper was able to easily clean up his own mistake.
14 min: However, even though the Cruyff turn produced nothing, there is something more valuable than goals.
12 minutes: An incredible move from Rafael Leon to get past Koundé down the left touchline. Back Heelsending Nuno Mendes into vast spaces. Sadly, the crossing that followed was a nightmare and it was a shame it didn’t translate into any tangible results for Portugal.
11 min: …and again he hit a mediocre shot that was easily cleared. “Thank goodness the game is on and we’re free from Fox TV’s insensitive coverage for 45 minutes,” sighs Erik Peterson. “Judging by their pre-match analysis (if you can call it that), the next two hours will simply be Mbappe and Ronaldo playing tennis at Wimbledon. Neither team has any intention of making any fundamental changes to their winning formula, having come this far. Portugal named the same line-up that played out in their goalless draw with Slovenia and subsequent penalty shoot-out victory, while France made two changes following their 1-0 win over Belgium, bringing on Eduardo Camavinga and Randal Kolo Muani in place of Marcus Thuram and the suspended Adrien Rabiot, who were both dropped to the bench.
