Possible Anthony Richardson trade discussed following Colts' decision on Daniel Jones

Quarterback Dynamics in Indianapolis

Daniel Jones, the former quarterback for the Giants, is now starting with the Indianapolis Colts. Meanwhile, Anthony Richardson, the Colts’ fourth overall pick in 2023, finds himself in a bit of a limbo regarding his role on the team.

As the NFL season kicks off this week, Richardson’s agent, Darik Jackson, recently had a meeting with Colts general manager Chris Ballard. Reports indicate that discussions around a potential trade were mentioned, though it wasn’t put forth as a formal request.

At just 23 years old, Richardson is currently stepping into a backup role behind Jones, who has been confirmed as the starter for the entire season.

Richardson expressed his feelings candidly: “You can’t just waltz in and take over someone’s space,” he remarked in a conversation with The Athletic, reflecting on his loss of the starting position to Jones. It’s a tough pill to swallow. He acknowledges that while Jones was brought in for a reason, it doesn’t make it any easier to accept.

One can imagine Richardson looking up to the 28-year-old Jones, who was selected sixth overall by the Giants back in 2019.

Jones experienced his fair share of ups and downs too; his tenure with the Giants came to a close when he lost his job to Tommy DeVito last November, subsequently requesting his release.

He found himself with the Minnesota Vikings but didn’t get any game time before signing a one-year, $14 million contract with the Colts in the offseason.

Given that Jones has started more than 11 games since 2020, Richardson is hoping to make the most of his opportunity with the Colts, notwithstanding the challenges he faced beforehand.

Richardson had limited college experience, playing just 24 games at Florida before the Colts handed him the starting role. Injuries and inconsistent performance have since sidelined him.

Now, he’s focused on reclaiming his role. He told The Athletic that improvement is his main priority.

Reflecting on his situation, Richardson shared, “It’s all-consuming. Whether I’m watching game film with fellow quarterbacks or coaches, there’s always this pressure to absorb everything. It’s about controlling the things I can and honing my skills.”

He remains hopeful about his potential return to the starting lineup, asserting, “If I can just keep improving, then being named the starting QB will come easier.”
