In a rather unexpected turn of events, a potential juror in Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs’ ongoing case managed to dodge participation due to his admitted drug use.
This unnamed individual was excused from jury duty after confessing to a marijuana addiction during the second day of jury selection on May 6, as reported by People.
“I smoke marijuana for recreational use,” he stated in court, trying to reassure the judge that his habit wouldn’t bias his decisions. Still, he acknowledged that his use of the drug might affect his judgment. Interestingly, cannabis is legal for adults over 21 in that city.
When asked whether he could refrain from smoking throughout the trial, which is expected to last around eight weeks, he openly admitted to having smoked the night before appearing in court. His candid admission is perhaps one of the most straightforward yet awkward ways to avoid jury duty.
He expressed that it would indeed be challenging to stay off marijuana during the trial, leading to his dismissal.
This situation reflects, in some ways, the broader issues around substance use in the country.
Combs is up against serious charges, including sex trafficking and racketeering. The prosecution alleges that he was involved in organizing elaborate sexual performances dubbed “freak offs,” according to reports.
Jury selection is slated to conclude on May 7, with a total of 45 jurors anticipated, 35 of whom have already been selected. One can hope they won’t make the same mistake of disclosing their personal habits in court.
Additionally, Combs’ former girlfriend, Cassandra ‘Cassie’ Ventura, is expected to take the stand as a witness.
Since his arrest in September 2024, Combs has been held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn and has been denied bail on three separate occasions, facing a possible life sentence if found guilty.
