The US Postal Service said it has signed a contract with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to reduce costs for government agencies.
Postmaster Louis DeJoy He spoke to Congress leaders In a letter that he had signed a contract with Elon Musk's doge, he cut his money and spent at an agency that has long lost money.
Dejoy said the organization has transformed from “abused government bureaucracy” which has experienced economic losses over the past four years into high-quality services, but has yet to achieve its goals.
“Last night I signed a contract with the General Services Bureau and Doge representatives to help identify and achieve further efficiency,” Dejoy said. “This is an effort that aligns with our efforts. There is a lot to do while we are accomplishing so much. We are happy that we have helped others in our valuable causes.”
The Post Office is an independent institution that remains touched by the presence of Doge in other departments of Doge.
The Postmaster said the service plans to cut 10,000 workers in its workforce within the next month through a voluntary early retirement program.
Dejoy said the Doge team asked about the big issues facing postal services. He cited a variety of issues, including billions of dollars of “burdening” funds, inadequate management of workers' compensation programs, unsubstantial missions as a result of “expensive activities, laws requiring participation in “expensive activities,” and miscalculations and misconceptions, including any orders as a result of laws that curb normal practice.
He said these services are housed in other departments, including the Human Resources Administration, the Ministry of Finance, the Department of Labor and the Council.
“Enter the Post Office, our Doge representatives, and federal agencies that need to adapt to and correct past flaws that need to be adapted to and corrected in the much-needed changes involved,” Dejoy wrote to members of Congress.
Rep. Jerry Connolly (D-Va.), ranking member of the Committee on Surveillance and Government Reform; Replying to Dejoy's letter Criticizes the decision to team up with Doge.
“The only bad thing for the post office than Dejoy's 'Delevering for America' plan is to hand over the service to Elon Musk and Doge. “This surrender has devastating consequences for all Americans, especially those hard to reach in rural areas. They rely on postal services every day to deliver mail, medicine, votes and more.”
Dejoy's agreement and letter follow his announcement in February that he will step down from his leadership position. He said he was appointed during President Trump's first term and wanted to begin the process of finding a successor.
He said it is important for the post office to provide ample notifications and time to introduce a new postmaster general who can continue the cost-cutting and efficiency work he started.
