An Upper West Side parrot caused a stir last week when it escaped its nest, forcing its owner to post signs around the neighborhood offering $500 rewards after warning people that the bird had a mischievous habit of saying the word “idiot.”
The 3-year-old Congo grey parrot named Goo Goo was playing in owner Connie I.’s third-floor backyard on West 76th Street on July 11 when “all of a sudden he tried to run away,” she said.
“I [Goo-Goo] “He’s on a chain because he doesn’t really fly, he glides, and when he glides, he doesn’t go very far… but without me noticing, he was gliding over my balcony,” she said.
Desperate to get her beloved bird back, Connie put up signs around the block.
“It’s pronounced ‘Goo-Goo’… another way to pronounce it is ‘Baba-a-hole’ (that’s how my mother did it),” the flyer said.
Poly learned the swear words from Connie’s parents in Queens.
“In Chinese, ‘baba’ means ‘dad,’ and my mother used to call my father ‘baba aho.’ So [Goo-Goo] “My mom actually called my dad ‘idiot’ in Chinese… and I was like, ‘Thank you, mom,'” she explained.
Fortunately, Goo Goo’s time free in the concrete jungle was short-lived.
A housekeeper working at a nearby house discovered the lost bird and protected it from an attacking dog, reuniting it safely with its relieved owner.
Meanwhile, Googoo has yet to change his attitude.
In a video shared by The Washington Post, the man can be seen staring directly into the camera and defiantly yelling an expletive three times in a row.
“I’m trying to get him not to say it,” Connie said.
