Power restored to almost all of Puerto Rico after massive blackout

Almost all power has been restored to Puerto Rico after a massive blackout on New Year's Eve, but the island is also expected to face power shortages as early as Thursday evening.

LUMA, the company that manages the island's electricity, said: 99 percent As of Thursday morning, those customers had power. As of Tuesday night, 90% of the company's 1.47 million customers across Puerto Rico were without power.

As of Thursday morning, power was mostly restored, but LUMA said in a post on social platform X. We expect power shortages and temporary rotating power outages to occur by Thursday afternoon. We appealed to customers to save energy.

The company is still investigating the cause of Tuesday's power outage, which left more than 1 million people in the dark on New Year's Eve.

The outages are the latest in a long series of power problems facing Puerto Rico. The U.S. territory has struggled to maintain its power grid since it was severely damaged by Hurricane Maria in 2017.
