Powerball jackpot leaps to $1 billion for Saturday's drawing

Powerball Jackpot Hits $1 Billion

This Saturday night, the Powerball Jackpot reached an exciting milestone, becoming the sixth billion-dollar jackpot in history.

Terry Miller, a hopeful player who bought tickets at a Midtown newsstand, shared his thoughts: “I spent another $10, and they’re pretty excited, to be honest. I have a lot of grandchildren, so the first thing I’d do is take care of all of them.”

The winners will have a choice between $453.1 million in a lump sum payment before taxes or a staggering $1 billion paid out over 30 years, with an annual increase of 5%, starting at $18.7 million each year.

MD Hussain, who works at a nearby newsstand, noted how some players were really upping their stakes. “Usually people spend about $10. But now, I’ve seen them spend $100, even $300 on this Powerball,” he said. He estimates selling around 500 tickets the following day, a significant rise driven by the billion-dollar draw.

Initially pegged at $950 million on Friday morning, the jackpot saw a boost after organizers reviewed national ticket sales, which had been slow for nearly three months.

This jackpot is the largest since April 2024 when a winner from Oregon took home $1.3 billion.

The upcoming winner, based in New York, would take home about $277.4 million after taxes, while a player from upstate could snag around $295 million.

As the excitement built, players were already dreaming about their fortunes. A university student named Colin L. from Nevada mentioned plans like paying off his parents’ mortgage and buying a house for himself. He even jokingly noted the importance of keeping quiet about his potential winnings to avoid attracting unwanted attention.

Lottery officials have touted this billion-dollar jackpot as “a chance for a big victory,” with Matt Strawn from the Powerball Product Group expressing hope that it adds extra thrill to Labor Day weekend.

The drawing is set for Saturday at 10:59 PM.
