Rise in Visits to Pregnancy Resource Centers Post-Dobbs

Following the Supreme Court’s significant Dobbs ruling, facilities aimed at preventing abortions are seeing a surge in visitors, according to a study published Monday. The Charlotte Rozier Institute, affiliated with the pro-life group SBA Pro-Life America, mentioned in its annual report that the commonly referred to Pregnancy Resource Center is projected to welcome over a million clients for the first time in 2024.

This figure marks an increase from 974,965 in 2022, the same year the Supreme Court dismantled federal abortion rights, pushing the issue back to state jurisdictions. The study analyzed data from roughly 3,000 centers across the country.

Furthermore, these centers have invested nearly $500 million in assistance for clients, with the value of supplies provided—like diapers, strollers, and cribs—rising by 48% since 2022.

SBA Pro-Life America President Marjorie Dannenfelser addressed reporters, describing these centers as critical in combatting what she deems an abortion crisis, particularly intensified by the availability of abortion pills through mail. Dannenfelser asserted that the Pregnancy Resource Center’s role has become even more vital as abortion numbers have reportedly climbed to around 1.1 million, largely due to unfavorable national policies on these medications.

“Organizations promoting family planning and a significant abortion movement tend to offer a solution via medication, suggesting a quick fix,” she stated.

Dannenfelser emphasized that these pregnancy centers, supported by dedicated care workers, strive to address the root issues respondents face, such as addiction, domestic violence, homelessness, and difficulties in navigating work-life balance. She noted the challenges people encounter when trying to support both their families and personal ambitions.

Despite the rising support, pregnancy centers have attracted criticism, particularly from more progressive factions, who claim these organizations mislead clients about their stance on abortion and their medical capabilities. There’s an ongoing lawsuit related to this dispute that the Supreme Court is set to hear soon.

The report highlights that these clinics offer a variety of services, ranging from essential goods to adoption mediation, counseling, abortion pill reversal, and various medical services including tests for pregnancy and STDs.

Additionally, the Charlotte Rosier Institute discovered that over 60% of women who have undergone abortions expressed a desire for greater emotional and financial backing. “When we genuinely inquire with real women in real situations, this is the prevalent sentiment we observe,” Dannenfelser remarked.
