Erik ten Hag and manager Jim Ratcliffe have been careful to say Manchester United need time to enjoy their glory days again and their logic is understandable given the team finished eighth in the Premier League last season, their lowest ever position. But privately, each team may be hoping for a chance to be a dark horse contender for at least a significant portion of the championship race.

United kick off their season at home to Fulham on Friday night, with ten Hag hoping to improve on their abysmal Premier League form. “We’ve won two trophies and that gives us confidence that we can win,” ten Hag said when asked if they could use last season’s league disappointment as motivation.
