Trump was projected as the winner of the Iowa caucuses on Monday night, just over 30 minutes after the results began pouring in.
He broke precedent by winning more than 50% of the state's total votes, according to polling averages.
The former president addressed his supporters shortly thereafter. He thanked the Hawkeye State for such a big win.
“Most importantly, I want to thank the great people of Iowa,” he said. “Thank you. We love you all. What a turnout, what a crowd! And I really think it's time for everyone to come together for this country. I We want to come together.”
Trump's victory is unprecedented for an open nomination. The previous record was set by George W. Bush in his 2000 year. During that election, Mr. Bush received over 41% of the total votes cast. However, the difference between him and his closest rival was only 11 points.
45th The president won Iowa by nearly 30 points over second place Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R-Fla.). DeSantis led Nikki Haley (RS.C) by just two points.
Ohio businessman Vivek Ramaswamy finished the race in fourth place. Immediately after the results were announced, he was dropped as a candidate for the Republican nomination. He supported Trump in his concession speech.
This is just the first nomination contest to take place this election cycle. But the Iowa caucuses have historically allowed candidates to gain momentum as the process drags on.
With Trump leading Iowa by a wide margin, he will now head to New Hampshire with the wind at his back. This could cause difficulties for Haley, as the state is expected to be the strongest.
An Iowa admissions poll found 45th The president had an advantage among first-time caucus attendees. He also received overwhelming support from voters who believe Joe Biden did not legitimately win the 2020 election.
Even among evangelicals, who are supposed to be DeSantis' strongest group, 51% supported the former president.
With a landslide victory, the Trump campaign is taking nothing for granted. Team Trump believes victory in Iowa is just the first step in making America great again.
“Iowans understand that tonight was very important,” Arizona Senate candidate Kari Lake said. “They achieved great things and accomplished great things. We are going to make America great again.”
The second nomination contest will be held in New Hampshire on Tuesday, January 23rdrd.
