Rep. Ayanna Pressley to Seek Re-Election in Massachusetts
Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.) has officially announced her decision to run for re-election in Massachusetts’ 7th Congressional District instead of challenging Sen. Ed Markey for his seat. This news came out on Tuesday, putting an end to months of speculation regarding a potential run in the Democratic primary.
In her statement, Pressley expressed that the support she received from voters throughout the state was “very humbling.” She mentioned, “Hearing from so many people across the Commonwealth was a testament to the strength of our movement.”
Pressley indicated that the timing doesn’t feel right for a statewide bid, particularly as she wants to prioritize family moments, especially with her daughter in her final year of college. She noted, “While it is an honor to serve the entire Commonwealth, I am convinced that the 7th District of Massachusetts is where I belong at this moment.” This, she explained, is influenced by her desire to be present at home and the targeted political atmosphere from this administration.
She also made it clear that she hasn’t closed the door on a future Senate race, stating, “I’m not closing the door on that passage.” While Sen. Markey has been associated with the progressive wing of the party, his decision to not enter the race prevents a complicated dynamic between the two.
On another note, Rep. Seth Moulton (D-Mass.) is already in the mix, aiming to present a generational contrast with the 79-year-old senator. A poll conducted by Suffolk University/Boston Globe prior to Thanksgiving indicated Markey leading Moulton among likely Democratic primary voters. However, when Pressley was included in the hypothetical matchup, she edged out Markey with a narrow victory.
In her announcement, Pressley emphasized her accomplishments in Congress, including expanding mental health support and securing substantial federal funding for her district. She reaffirmed her commitment to fighting for a just and equitable Massachusetts.
