PHILADELPHIA — Preston Mattingly, former Yankees captain first baseman and son of MLB manager Don Mattingly, was promoted Friday to general manager of the Philadelphia Phillies under president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski. .
Sam Faldo, who has been GM since December 2020, will share GM duties with Mattingly.
However, Fuld is currently studying for a master's degree in business administration at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, and will become the team's executive director once he earns his degree in May 2026.
“Sam and Preston are two of the best young guys in the game,” Dombrowski said. “They're good in every way. We all have a good relationship and you actually look to the future and say, 'Okay, what's this going to look like?'
Dombrowski, 68, is under contract with the Phillies through 2027. That means if Dombrowski decides to retire after three seasons of Mattingly coaching him and learning the trade, the Phillies already have his successor in place.
“I think he has the ability to serve as a general manager and director of baseball operations for many years to come,” Dombrowski said.
Mattingly, 37, played in the minor leagues from 2006 to 2011 before attending Lamar University, where he was captain of the basketball team and earned his bachelor's degree in 2016.
He worked for the San Diego Padres from 2017 to 2021 and was promoted to major league advance scouting and game planning coordinator.
He joined the Phillies in September 2021 as the Director of Player Development and was promoted to Assistant Director of Player Development in November of last year.
“I'm very excited about this role,” Mattingly said. “Honestly, I love baseball. It means a lot to me. It's been my life since I was born. … I'm so excited to work with the people within the organization. They challenge you every day, and we all share the same vision of helping the Philadelphia Phillies achieve their ultimate goal of winning the World Series.”
Upon graduation, Fuld will oversee the business operations department.

Current business operations manager Dave Buck will retire in December.
Fuld said several people, including himself, will be in the role for 18 months until graduation.
“I've always been interested in the business side of baseball,” Fuld said. “That was always appealing to me. This came out of a conversation I had with Dave and (managing partner John Middleton) in the spring, and we looked at the short, medium and long term of this opportunity. I didn't really think about it too much at the time, but once I thought about it more deeply, I found it to be a very attractive opportunity both professionally and personally.”
The Phillies also announced two other promotions in baseball operations.
Luke Marton has been promoted to director of player development and Edward Gonzalez has been promoted to director of hitting development.
Don Mattingly was a six-time All-Star with the Yankees from 1982 to 1995, then coached the Los Angeles Dodgers from 2011 to 2015 and the Miami Marlins from 2016 to 2022.
