Preview and prediction for Super Bowl 2026, along with key points to observe

A closer look at the 2026 Super Bowl featuring the Patriots and Seahawks on Sunday night in Santa Clara, California:

Key Matchup

Seahawks WR Jackson Smith-Njigba vs. Patriots CB Christian Gonzalez

This matchup is what we like to call “good on good” during training camp.

Gonzalez is recognized as one of the league’s top cover corners. Meanwhile, Smith-Njigba has made headlines this season with 117 receptions (ranking fourth overall) and leading the NFL with 1,793 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns.

Will Gonzalez shift his coverage to match up against Smith-Njigba? This season, he primarily positioned himself on the right side, about 72% of the time, but he did adapt against the Buccaneers by moving in with Emeka Egbuka.

In the NFC Championship, the Rams struggled to contain Smith-Njigba, who tallied 153 receiving yards and a touchdown. Gonzalez offers the Patriots a chance, at least somewhat, to manage the situation. “He can do anything,” Gonzalez remarked. “He’s great.”

Four Key Points

Sam Darnold: Darnold has developed impressively from a struggling young player to someone capable of significant comebacks. A Super Bowl win would only add to that narrative.

However, he still has issues with turnovers. This season, his turnover rate reached 7.2%, the worst among starting quarterbacks according to Next Gen Stats. He recorded 14 interceptions and had a staggering 20 turnovers, including six fumbles lost.

It’s wiser to hold onto the ball than to risk giving it away, especially with a Patriots defense that intercepted C.J. Stroud four times in the divisional round. “When you put hits on a quarterback and attack in various ways, it’s natural for them to become frustrated and struggle,” said Patriots edge rusher K’Lavon Chaison.

Big Play Alert: The quarterbacks in this match are among the top five in the league for completion percentage, touchdown-to-interception ratio, and yards per deep pass attempt. Darnold and Drake Maye have the ability to make big throws, yet they will face two defenses adept at preventing long touchdowns. The Seahawks allowed just one touchdown, and the Patriots only allowed two on passes over 20 yards. Which trend will hold up?

Hard to Defend: Seattle’s defense has been exceptional, allowing the fewest points in the NFL this season, bolstered by former Giants players Leonard Williams and Julian Love. “This is the most well-rounded defense, probably the most complete team I’ve ever been a part of,” Williams stated. “We excel at all three levels and have solid depth throughout.”

But there’s a catch. The Seahawks have also missed 162 tackles this season, ranking 12th most in the league. In fact, 102 missed tackles happened on passes, as per Pro Football Focus.

Days of May: If everything else fails, Maye shows that sometimes you just have to improvise. In the AFC Championship, he made a successful bootleg run on a fake handoff, converting a critical third-and-5 and leading them to a 10-7 victory over the Broncos.

Maye leads the league in scrambles for first downs (27) and is third overall in total rushing yards from scrambles (432). He has averaged nearly seven scrambles per game since Week 15. If the Seahawks have a vulnerability, it’s with containing quarterbacks on the run, as opponents average 5.3 rushing yards per game, ranking fourth in the league.

Prediction: Seahawks 23, Patriots 19
