President Trump’s project, referred to as the “Big, Beautiful Building,” made progress through the House on Thursday morning, albeit gradually, as lawmakers engaged in their legislative duties during a session amid ongoing conflicts.
The GOP Expense Bill now awaits deliberation in the Senate, where concerns regarding Medicaid reforms and ballooning deficits have become pressing among Republican members.
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) has urged his fellow lawmakers to keep the bill’s language intact, emphasizing a delicate balance between fiscal conservatives and those advocating for tax credits.
As part of the Salt Caucus agreement, Johnson has consented to adopt the changes made by the Senate.
However, Senate Majority Leader John Tune (Rs.D.) has proposed some separate amendments. Johnson’s appearances on CNN’s “The State of the Union,” Fox News’ “Fox News Sunday,” and CBS’s “Face the Nation” appear aimed at clarifying and easing tensions between the two chambers of Congress.
Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) has already expressed his intention to support the bill, while Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) has voiced his opposition to a $4 trillion increase in the debt limit, criticizing the bill. Both will be featured on Fox News’ and CNN’s Sunday programs, respectively, where they’ll discuss their concerns.
As Washington navigates Trump’s budget proposals, Harvard University finds itself embroiled in a legal battle with the federal government. The university has filed a lawsuit to block the proposed elimination of certifications for the Student and Exchange Visitor Program, which permits international students to enroll.
Citing First Amendment rights, campus officials claim the Trump administration is retaliating against Harvard for its academic independence and unwillingness to yield to federal directives regarding its curriculum and student organizations.
According to an open letter released by the university, “The cancellation is part of ongoing governmental actions against Harvard for maintaining its independence.”
This crackdown on international students coincides with the detention of several foreign visa holders on college campuses, particularly those expressing support for Palestine amid the conflict in Gaza. Human rights advocates have raised alarms about the severe humanitarian crisis, highlighting shortages of food and essential aid.
Cindy McCain, the executive director of the United Nations World Food Program, is expected to discuss the situation in the Middle East during her appearance on CBS’s “Face the Nation.”
