Sunday shows preview: Trump signs ‘big, beautiful bill’ into law; 'No progress' made on Russia-Ukraine ceasefire

Trump Signs Major Legislative Package on Independence Day

This week, President Trump achieved a key legislative win by signing what is being termed the “Big, Beautiful Bill.” This significant package not only extends the tax cuts from 2017 but also introduces cuts to Medicaid.

The signing took place at the White House on July 4th and was timed months in advance to meet a deadline set by Trump and his closest aides.

“We made promises. It was really promised, we kept our promises and we kept them. This is a democratic victory on the birthday of democracy. And I have to say, people are happy,” Trump remarked.

The new law incorporates several campaign promises, such as eliminating certain fees and some social security taxes. It also increases the limit for state and local tax (SALT) credits and allocates $150 billion for immigration enforcement, deportation, and border wall construction.

In addition, the legislation aims to boost production of coal, natural gas, and oil while cutting back on incentives for green energy. The debt ceiling will increase by $5 billion. Among other funding measures, it includes $150 billion for “Golden Dome” missile defense projects and related construction.

Critics, particularly Democrats, have voiced concern over cuts to nutrition programs and significant reductions in Medicaid support as part of this bill.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) stated on Thursday, “By passing a big and beautiful bill, we intend to make the country stronger, safer, and more prosperous than ever before, benefiting all Americans.” Johnson is set to appear on “Fox News Sunday” to discuss legislative processes and future priorities.

On the economic front, the US added 147,000 jobs in June, surpassing expectations, while the unemployment rate held steady at 4.1%.

During a conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday, Trump expressed disappointment, noting a lack of progress regarding a ceasefire between Moscow and Kiev. He said later that he felt “very disappointed” with Putin, emphasizing that he doubts the Russian leader’s willingness to halt aggression.

Meanwhile, the US Department of Defense has paused shipments of air defense missiles and munitions to Ukraine. Senator Mark Wayne Mullin (R-Okla.), a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, is expected to address this issue on “Fox News” and “Sunday Morning Futures.”
