The government shutdown has now lasted about four days, with Republicans and Democrats firmly entrenched in their positions, particularly concerning healthcare funding.
House GOP members returned to their districts during the “duty period” designated by Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), who reiterated the Republican aim to resume legislative sessions so Senate Democrats can vote on government funding.
“The House will reconvene as soon as Chuck Schumer can restart the government,” Johnson stated on Friday, placing blame on Senate Minority Leader Schumer (D-N.Y.) for the federal shutdown.
In a climate of uncertainty in Washington, Johnson and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) are preparing to address American citizens during a joint appearance on NBC’s “Meet Kristen Welker.”
Both Schumer and Johnson are also scheduled to appear on CBS News’ “Face the Nation.”
Aside from shutdown inquiries, Johnson may need to explain why GOP leadership refused to swear in Rep. Adelita Griarba (D-Ariz.).
During Jeffries’ show on Sunday, they might also reflect on some memes and AI-generated videos shared by the president.
“Everything President Trump did on Monday was reckless and dangerous,” said the House Minority Leader during a prior appearance on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”
On the other hand, Trump contended that the shutdown might actually enhance his ability to eliminate programs championed by Democrats and initiate widespread layoffs of federal employees.
“I’m meeting today with Project 2025’s Rus Verto. I’ll determine which Democratic institutions are frauds,” he remarked on True Social.
“I can’t believe that radical left-wing Democrats have handed me this extraordinary chance. They’re not foolish; this is their way of quietly and swiftly making America great again!” he added.
As thousands await their fates, military personnel were addressed by top generals and admirals at a meeting in Quantico, Virginia earlier this week, aimed at aiding the Trump administration’s aim to challenge the “political correctness” narrative.
Both Trump and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth delivered unusual speeches to military leaders, claiming the nation is facing an “internal invasion.”
Trump even suggested utilizing democratically-led cities as “training grounds” for the military, a comment that raised eyebrows among Democrats and former military officials who labeled it as “odd” and “concerning.”
Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.), a combat veteran known for her critical stance towards the Trump administration, is set to speak on “The Face of the People” about the remarks made in Quantico. Hegseth will be featured on Fox News’ “The Sunday Briefing.”
Meanwhile, Secretary of State Marco Rubio will make appearances on both Fox News Sunday and ABC’s “Face the Nation” this week.
Rubio and Duckworth will also discuss a proposed peace deal between Israel and Hamas, orchestrated by the Trump administration.
This 20-point peace plan aims to curb future strikes from Israel and transfer control of the Gaza Strip to an independent Palestinian authority in exchange for the release of all living and deceased hostages. Both Israel and Hamas have expressed partial agreement, but Trump has urged swift action to formalize the deals.
These issues, among others, will be tackled in Sunday shows. Below is a complete list of guests.
