Previous Owner of ‘Home Alone’ House Found Dead After Facing Child Porn Charges

Body of Previous Owner of 'Home Alone' House Discovered Following Child Pornography Charges

Authorities found the body of John Abensien, the 79-year-old former owner of a house featured in “Home Alone,” dead in Illinois on Wednesday, amid ongoing suspicions related to child pornography.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office reported that Abensien was discovered at Derwenmaa Nature Preserve, according to ABC 7 Chicago.

Abensien, who owned the home located at 671 Lincoln Avenue in Winnetka, had recently been arrested for possessing abusive materials.

Before his remains were located, his wife had reported him missing, prompting a search by the Lake Forest Police Department, as noted by the Lake & McHenry County Scanner.

“An autopsy revealed that Abensien died from asphyxia, suggesting self-inflicted injuries,” the coroner’s office stated. Notably, he had just been released from prison on April 17 after facing charges in a child pornography case.

Law enforcement executed a search warrant at his home on April 16 following a cyber tip that linked him to illicit materials.

During the investigation, authorities uncovered electronic evidence in a Google Drive account, along with photographs of children. A recent hearing focused on the case revealed that the judge decided to release Abensien before trial, considering his age and clean criminal history.

During the hearing, Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Patrick Windmoller disclosed that Abensien possessed approximately 100 images of naked children aged 7 to 10, along with others of children aged 4 to 15 in various states of undress. One photograph depicted a child on a morgue table, while others included disturbing images of dismembered women.

In a related note, Abensien allegedly wrote about a case involving a faux FBI agent who stalked, assaulted, and ultimately took the life of a woman in Wisconsin. Prosecutors asserted that the victim’s real name was mentioned in his article, as she owned a part-time residence in the state.

Following the arrest, Lake Forest Police Chief John Burke commented, “These incidents are extremely unsettling, and we are dedicated to thoroughly investigating and prosecuting those involved. We will persist in collaborating closely with law enforcement to safeguard our children and our community.”

The U.S. Department of Justice characterizes child pornography as a manifestation of child sexual exploitation, also referred to as child sexual abuse material. They emphasize the enduring harm that occurs when such images are disseminated online, among other details regarding the psychological impact on victims.

The agency added that the rise of the Internet and digital technology has coincided with an increase in such crimes, as these images can be easily found across various platforms. Furthermore, perpetrators often connect on online forums to share their interests related to child abuse, which only fuels the demand for more egregious images and perpetuates ongoing abuse of victims.
