Price of USPS Forever stamp to increase to 82 cents following regulator’s approval of rate hike

USPS is said to be considering its first fuel surcharge on packages.

US Postal Service Price Increases Coming This Summer

The cost of sending letters is set to rise again this summer, as federal regulators have approved additional rate hikes for the United States Postal Service (USPS). One notable change is a 4-cent increase for Forever stamps.

This decision, made by the Postal Regulatory Commission on Wednesday, means new prices will take effect on July 12. Specifically, the cost of a First Class Mail Forever stamp will jump from 78 cents to 82 cents, contributing to an overall price increase of about 4.8% for the Postal Service.

Other changes in approved pricing include:

  • Domestic postcards increasing from 61 cents to 65 cents
  • 1 oz letters going from 74 cents to 78 cents
  • International postcards rising from $1.70 to $1.75
  • International 1 oz letters also increasing from $1.70 to $1.75

The added cost for each additional ounce of a letter will remain at 29 cents. USPS indicates that these increases are essential to manage ongoing operational expenses and financial hurdles.

Financial Struggles and Operational Funding

Amid significant financial difficulties, the USPS has stated it is tapping into every possible resource to maintain its universal service obligations and continue serving Americans. This statement aligns with the proposals made earlier this year.

It’s worth noting that the Postal Service does not receive taxpayer funding for its operating costs, relying instead on revenue generated through postage and various services.

While the Postal Regulatory Commission has authorized these rate increases, it also expressed deep concerns regarding the long-term challenges facing the USPS. Issues such as decreasing mail volumes and financial sustainability have raised alarms, and the commission acknowledged the lack of a legal basis to deny the hikes according to existing laws. Furthermore, the USPS has nearly exhausted its pricing capabilities for first-class mail under current regulations and continues to grapple with substantial market declines.

Please keep in mind that any Forever stamps purchased prior to the upcoming price rise will still be valid for mailing standard 1-ounce letters, regardless of when they are used.
