Carney Considers Military Support for Ukraine

On Sunday, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney traveled to Ukraine, hinting at the possibility of deploying ground troops to assist in the nation’s defense against Russia.

During a press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Carney emphasized Canada’s steadfast support, coinciding with the 34th anniversary of Ukraine’s independence. He reaffirmed a commitment of $2 billion in military aid, initially announced during the G7 summit in June.

“We collaborate within the Union and with allied nations to ensure security for Ukraine on land, air, and sea. I won’t dismiss the idea of military presence,” Carney stated.

A local news outlet noted that Carney did not elaborate on whether the military involvement would be based on training capabilities or as part of a peacekeeping force.

“It’s unrealistic for Canada to see the Ukrainian military as the only guarantee of security in the medium term. Strengthening is essential,” he added during the press conference.

In addition to the aid previously mentioned, Carney announced an allocation of $500 million for Ukrainian ammunition and military equipment, sourced from the United States as part of NATO’s Ukrainian Requirements List initiative.

“Ukraine is at the forefront of the fight for freedom and sovereignty. As the war continues, Ukrainians require more military resources. Canada is answering that call with $2 billion earmarked for drones, armored vehicles, and other critical assets,” Carney remarked.

On the same day, the leaders established a joint defense production agreement, designed to enhance bilateral cooperation in defense industries. This agreement aims to create new production capacities and ensure the steady supply of defense products.

According to Ukrainian officials, this agreement will not only facilitate the establishment of Ukrainian firms in Canada but also promote technological exchange and provide the Armed Forces of Ukraine with modern weapons and military equipment over time.

Zelensky expressed his appreciation for the partnership, indicating his readiness to engage in Canada’s PURL program and sign essential agreements.

“This meeting with Prime Minister Carney is highly significant, especially today, a meaningful day for Ukrainians. It symbolizes Canada’s early recognition of our restored independence,” he noted.
