Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Arrive in Australia
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have arrived in Australia, and it’s quite different from their usual royal style. They landed in Melbourne on April 14, marking their first visit to the city in over seven years.
Unlike their grand entrance during the 2018 royal tour, where they arrived via a private Qantas suite, this time the couple opted for a business class seat on a commercial flight from Los Angeles, surprising other passengers on board.
Royal Broadcasting Director Ian Pelham Turner noted that their choice to fly commercially was smart, as it helps them connect with everyday Australians. He mentioned that this kind of decision would likely be appreciated by the press down under. Harry and Meghan are expected to feel quite at home during this visit.
Upon disembarking, an Australian traveler who spotted Harry remarked, “It was shocking to see someone look so fresh after a long flight.” An American traveler admitted they only recognized the couple after getting off the plane.
In contrast to past arrivals where they would pose for photographers, Meghan and Harry quietly left the airport without stopping for photos. Royal expert Hilary Fordwich commented on their current financial troubles, suggesting that while they seem to be trying to maintain a connection with the public, their royal duties and lifestyle may no longer be sustainable.
Immediately after arriving, Harry and Meghan visited the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne. They were seen walking hand-in-hand through the halls, greeting patients and staff. Meghan wore a dark navy dress paired with black Dior heels, while Harry donned a navy suit and white shirt.
This visit carries personal significance, as Prince Harry’s parents, Princess Diana and Prince Charles, had visited the same hospital during a trip to Australia back in 1985. Professor Christine Kilpatrick AO, Chair of the Royal Hospital for Children, remarked on the positive impact their visit had, stating that it brought joy to many patients who frequent the hospital.
When asked about his excitement for their trip, Harry simply said, “Everything!” The couple is scheduled to engage in a mix of charity work and public appearances throughout their four-day itinerary, which includes stops in Sydney and Canberra.
Harry is set to be the keynote speaker at a mental health summit in Melbourne, while Meghan is headlining a luxury women’s retreat in Sydney, which has attracted some negative attention due to high ticket prices that range from $1,860 to $2,250.
Despite this visit being privately funded, concerns have been raised regarding security costs, as some expenses may be covered by taxpayers. Interestingly, their children, Archie and Lilibet, are not accompanying them on this trip.
