Prince Harry’s Speech Disrupted by Teleprompter Issue at Clinton Global Initiative

During a speech at the Clinton Global Initiative in New York on Wednesday, Prince Harry found himself abruptly cut short due to a malfunction with the teleprompter, just seven minutes into his address focused on the dangers of artificial intelligence. After about 40 minutes and other presentations, he returned to finish his remarks.

Opening the second segment, he humorously attributed the interruption to the very technology he was discussing. “Hello again. So AI got into my speech, so I was asked to come out and finish it,” he remarked, adding, “Interesting to see what it was so concerned about in part two.”

Earlier in the session titled “Getting Disruption Right,” Harry had paused mid-sentence, stating, “The damage was already done to a generation of children and parents. We do not have years for what comes next.” He then stopped, leaving his thought hanging in the air.

After a brief moment of pacing, he set down his microphone and exited the stage. A spokesperson later acknowledged the technical issue with the teleprompter.

Harry expressed concern over how AI interacts with children differently than social media ever did. “Social media learned how to capture our attention. AI is learning how to enter our relationships,” he explained. “It doesn’t just want your attention, it wants your attachment. It wants to be the thing you confide in. The thing that remembers you. The thing that tells you it understands you. The ultimate sycophant.”

As he spoke, the father of Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5, shared images of kids affected by these issues.

“Hundreds have become thousands. Thousands of parents grieving their children,” he said. “Millions of families are living with the consequences of a digital revolution that moved faster than our willingness to protect them.”

This topic has already led families to take legal action, with Character.AI and Google settling multiple lawsuits earlier this year. These lawsuits accused chatbots of contributing to teen suicides and mental health struggles, including one filed by a mother after the death of her 14-year-old son. Details of the settlements were not made public.

Harry’s appearance marked his first in the U.S. since relocating his family to Britain the previous month. Recently, King Charles III had confirmed that Harry and Meghan Markle remain non-working royals and will not be using their titles.

Interestingly, Harry had presented a similar warning from the same platform in 2024, arguing that social media companies had become “dangerously powerful.”
