Prince William alters royal customs with straightforward parenting style, say experts

Prince William’s Parenting Approach Stems from Past Experiences

Prince William has become notably protective of his children, likely shaped by the emotional challenges he faced in the past. This observation has been underscored by various royal experts, especially following remarks made by Brazilian television presenter Luciano Huck during his visit to Brazil, where he accepted the Earthshot Award.

In the interview, the Prince of Wales shared that he and Duchess Kate engage in candid conversations with Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis regarding their previous cancer diagnoses. “Hiding things from them doesn’t work,” he noted, emphasizing the importance of transparency.

Experts noted that it’s not surprising William is taking a different approach—one that emphasizes integrity and unity in his family life. British broadcaster Helena Chard commented on how the young prince is tackling parental duties, stating that he carries the weight of his parents’ troubled relationship. The disintegration of King Charles and Princess Diana’s marriage, and the subsequent fallout, deeply impacted William and his brother, Harry.

Chard highlighted that William and Kate are committed to ensuring their children are informed about significant issues. “They don’t want their kids to hear shocking news from elsewhere,” she pointed out. The royal couple is focused on raising a resilient and confident family, which they believe benefits the monarchy’s future.

In 2024, both Charles and Kate were diagnosed with cancer, which William acknowledged adds complexity to family dynamics. He asserted that every family faces challenges of some kind, and this recent experience has further emphasized the need for open communication with their children.

William shared, however, that there are ups and downs in this approach, admitting, “Sometimes I feel like I’m sharing too much with my kids.” The balancing act of how much information to disclose is tricky, as he illustrates the fine line parents tread between offering reassurance and causing unnecessary worry. “When there are no answers, more questions arise,” he explained.

William is determined to maintain a balanced life for his children, navigating the complexities of their public roles while still cherishing everyday moments. Despite the weight of their expectations, he takes joy in the simple, familial experiences. He emphasized that children should feel free to raise questions, as openness fosters trust and emotional resilience.

The prince also expressed concern over the influence of social media, making decisions about their children’s access to technology. Currently, Prince George and his siblings do not have phones, although William noted that as they grow, this will likely change. He wishes to restrict their internet access to protect them from inappropriate exposure but aims for a practical approach, allowing limited communication through basic devices.

In his conversations about parenting, William often reflects on his own upbringing, particularly the emotional turmoil surrounding his parent’s divorce and the public scrutiny that followed. These experiences shape his intent to provide a different environment for his children, one rooted in candidness and support.

As he embraces the challenges of fatherhood, William, ultimately, aspires to foster a nurturing environment. He recognizes the importance of being there for his children in both difficult and joyful moments, hoping to instill resilience and unity within their family home.
