Prince William says 2024 was ‘hardest year in my life’ after Kate Middleton, King Charles’ cancer diagnoses

Prince William has revealed that he is facing “the most difficult year of his life” after his wife, Duchess Kate, and father, King Charles, were diagnosed with cancer in 2024.

The 42-year-old Prince of Wales spoke candidly about his “brutal” year in an interview with reporters in Cape Town, South Africa, on Thursday.

“It's been the worst, probably the toughest year of my life,” William said, according to People magazine.

“So it's been really difficult trying to get everything on track past everything else,” he added.

“But I'm so proud of my wife. I'm so proud of my dad for handling what they've done,” William said. “But from a personal family perspective, it was, yes, cruel.”

Buckingham Palace announced in February that Prince Charles, 75, had been diagnosed with a type of cancer and was undergoing treatment.

In March, Middleton revealed her cancer diagnosis and said she was undergoing preventive chemotherapy. In a video shared in September, the 42-year-old princess revealed that she is cancer-free after completing treatment.

Prince William shared an update on Middleton's health during the interview, telling reporters she was “fine”.

William, who was told he looked “relaxed”, said: “I couldn't be more relaxed this year so it's very interesting to see you all do that.

“But it’s more of a case of just working on it and you have to keep moving forward.

“I enjoy my job. I also enjoy pacing myself and having time with my family,” said sons Prince George, 11, and Prince Louis, 6, and daughter Prince Charlotte. Prince William, who has (9), added: With Middleton.

William's interview took place at the end of a trip to Cape Town where he attended the 4th Earthshot Awards Ceremony.
