Reflection on Family by Prince William
Prince William has been sharing his thoughts on his relationship with the late Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip.
In a recent episode of Eugene Levy’s Apple TV+ series, “The Reluctant Traveler,” the 43-year-old future king noted that his bond with his grandparents grew stronger over the years.
When asked if he was close with the couple, William replied, “Yes, I had a good relationship.” He remarked on how their generational gap made their earlier interactions quite formal. “As we got older, that relationship became warmer and warmer,” he added.
William reflected, saying, “I think my relationship with my grandparents was definitely at its best when they were in their 80s, when they were a bit more relaxed.”
Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip enjoyed a long marriage of 73 years, until Philip passed away at 99 in 2021, followed by the Queen’s death at 96 the next year.
After Philip’s passing, William celebrated him as “an extraordinary person who could brighten up any room with his humor and charm.” Following the Queen’s death, he referred to her as an “extraordinary leader” and a “guiding light” for their family.
In the show, William mentioned his upcoming role as king, expressing, “I don’t feel too overwhelmed by it. Not anymore, anyway.” He admitted that earlier in life, the idea was daunting—”Wow, am I actually doing this?” However, with time, he has found comfort in the notion and believes he can handle it, even when unexpected challenges arise.
During the episode titled “Living British Royal Life,” William discussed how rapidly life can change. “We were very lucky,” he said, noting that his grandparents lived into their late ’90s and exemplified fitness and resilience, but acknowledged the unpredictable nature of life.
Reflecting on the family’s recent struggles, including his wife Kate Middleton and his father King Charles facing cancer diagnoses, William admitted, “I think 2023 and 2024 were the hardest years I’ve ever had.” He shared insights on the tests life brings and the importance of overcoming them.
Kate revealed in March 2024 that she was undergoing treatment for cancer and kept a low profile during that time. By September 2024, she joyfully announced she was cancer-free, expressing her relief at completing her chemotherapy after a tough nine months.
In January, Kate mentioned the adjustment to a “new normal” post-diagnosis and looked forward to a productive year, appreciating the support she received from everyone.
On another note, King Charles was diagnosed with cancer in February 2024 and continues to receive treatment, expressing gratitude to those who support cancer patients and their families in April.
