Princeton University students end anti-Israel hunger strike ‘due to health concerns’

Princeton University students protesting the war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip have called for an end to their hunger strike after just 10 days.

Princeton Divest Now, a student protest group calling on the New Jersey Ivy League university to withdraw from the U.S. Middle East ally, calls for additional strikes due to the high number of civilian deaths in the Gaza Strip. Participants said they would continue their efforts.

“Due to health concerns for 13 strikers who fasted for 10 days, the first wave of hunger strikes has ended and the second wave has begun,” the group said in a post shared on Instagram.

It added: “In the tradition of Rotary strikes, seven new strikers are undertaking an indefinite fast for a free Palestine.”

The “hunger strike” initially ended after members vowed never to eat or drink again until two demands were met.

“Participants refrain from eating and drinking everything (except water) until our demands are met. We dedicate ourselves wholeheartedly to the liberation of Palestine. Princeton, listen now! We will not be moved. ” the group wrote in a May 3 post.

The post included the following demands: “(1) Meet with students to discuss demands for disclosure, divestment, and academic and cultural boycott of Israel. (2) Peaceful sit-ins. “grant a complete amnesty from all criminal and disciplinary charges against the participants.” -Rescind the ban and eviction of students on all campuses. ”

It is believed that not only students at the university have fasted, but also faculty and staff members have taken part in a 24-hour hunger strike since an encampment formed on campus in protest of Israel’s military action aimed at eradicating Hamas.

The teachers’ 24-hour hunger strike, which began at 10am on Friday morning, ended on Saturday.

“Our day-long solidarity fast is in recognition of the students who are putting their bodies on the line in this strike to show solidarity with the Palestinian people of Gaza and the West Bank, who are subject to forced starvation and compulsory starvation. The purpose is to highlight the effort: genocide committed by the Israeli state,” the teacher said at a press conference Friday.

The brevity of the 24-hour hunger strike was ridiculed on social media, with many linking it to intermittent fasting, a dietary trend in which participants do not eat for long periods of the day.

“24 hours?! I do this once a week for fun. This is embarrassing,” one person tweeted at X.

“I’m on 3/4 of a Princeton faculty hunger strike every day!” another X user wrote.
