Private Chats with ChatGPT Appear in Google Searches

A recent report highlights that numerous ChatGPT conversations have appeared in Google search results, often containing personal and sensitive information.

Surveys by First Company indicate that conversations shared via ChatGPT’s “share” feature might be more public than users realize. The findings suggest that thousands of chats, including those containing confidential information, are indexed by search engines like Google.

When users click the “Share” button in ChatGPT, a public link is created that anyone can access. These links are typically used to share conversations with others or to continue them across different devices. However, many users may not understand that these links can also be indexed by Google and show up in search results. A quick search (site: chatgpt.com/share) found over 4,500 public chats, covering topics like trauma, mental health, relationships, and work-related challenges.

While OpenAI doesn’t attach usernames to these chats, there are still risks tied to this exposure. If users mention identifying details—like their name, location, email, or job information—they may inadvertently disclose more than they intended. Businesses utilizing ChatGPT for marketing or internal planning could also risk sharing sensitive strategies or terminology.

Even if a link has been deleted, it may still appear in cached pages until Google refreshes its index. This means that if someone’s name or company is associated with shared content, it can still be discoverable post-deletion, potentially damaging their reputation.

To safeguard conversations, users are encouraged to refrain from sharing sensitive information that could be made public. The “Share” feature should be used judiciously, and it’s wise to review conversations thoroughly before sharing.

Searching for “site: chatgpt.com/share” along with your name or a topic can help you identify what information is publicly available.

Shared links can be removed from ChatGPT’s shared link dashboard, but it may take time for them to disappear from Google’s index. Alternatively, users can share AI-generated responses through screenshots or copied text instead of public links.
