Bobby Jones: A Golf Legend
Bobby Jones was born on March 17, 1902, in Atlanta, Georgia, and he became one of the most celebrated amateur golfers in history. From a young age, he exhibited significant talent, even reaching the third round of the U.S. Amateur when he was just 14. Over his career, he clinched 13 major tournament titles, a record that still holds strong today. Remarkably, in 1930, Jones achieved a feat that is remembered to this day.
This week, the golf community mourned the loss of a young player, Jessica Bang, who passed away at just 18. She tragically suffered a brain hemorrhage during a tournament.
While competing in the KLPGA Tour’s international qualifying tournament in Thailand on August 1, she collapsed and underwent emergency surgery at Singhaet Ramintra Hospital in Bangkok. Sadly, her family shared on GoFundMe that she passed away on August 13 at 7:20 a.m. local time.
“We are truly heartbroken by this loss, but we will continue to remember Jessica and celebrate her accomplishments, passion, and dedication to golf,” stated a GoFundMe created by her cousins. They expressed their deep sorrow, highlighting that, “As her cousin, we will forever cherish the time and memories we shared with Jessica. Her sense of humor and bright personality will always hold a special place in our hearts.”
The GoFundMe page indicated that contributions would assist with her medical expenses.
The WPGA Tour of Australasia expressed their condolences, stating, “The thoughts and prayers of everyone at the WPGA Tour of Australasia and the wider Australian golf community are with Jessica’s family, friends, and everyone who knew and loved her during this incredibly difficult time.”
Born in South Korea, Bang was placed on life support after her surgery. Even though she was still early in her career, she made a significant mark by winning the 2026 Ford Women’s New South Wales Open regional qualifying event at Moss Vale just this November. She dominated the competition, carding a final round of 65 to win by five strokes and setting a course record. Additionally, she also claimed victory at the Queensland Amateur. Such a promising career cut short feels unfathomable.
