193 immigrant advocacy groups have sprung into action with a letter calling on Joe Biden to act quickly to stop President Donald Trump's plan to launch a mass deportation program of illegal aliens.
Each organization announced that letter On Friday, he urged Biden and Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to “take immediate action to protect immigrant communities while they can.”
“In the remaining months of your term, you have an opportunity, before the next president celebrates Mass, to honor your commitment to the dignity and humane treatment of all people, including those who immigrated to our country,” the letter said. It says “Yes.” Deportation programs separate families and upend the lives of millions of people in the process. ”
The letter goes on to make a series of demands for specific actions Biden should take to thwart President Trump's plan before he takes office.
The first demand for Biden is to close all federally run immigrant detention facilities. In these facilities, “physical abuse, inadequate food and water, medical neglect or abuse, unsanitary conditions, and faulty plumbing have been documented,” the group alleges. The number of avoidable deaths in ICE detention centers is at a record high. ”
The group argues that government-supported detention centers should be abolished and their work left to “private companies,” as Biden has reportedly promised.
The groups also called on Biden to stop the expansion of the ICE detention system by “freezing all negotiations and canceling all requests for proposals (RFPs) and requests for information (RFIs).” There is. The groups are calling on Biden to halt all plans to open facilities in partnership with private prison corporations.
The expansion “will have a dire impact on immigrant and mixed-status community members,” they say.
“To protect families and prevent separation, we must take every possible action to prevent the next administration from easily expanding detention capacity, including pressuring Congress to pass cuts to immigration detention costs,” the letter said. continued.
My final request to Biden is to release everyone currently in ICE detention.
The letter further states:
We will protect people, starting with those who are particularly vulnerable (including those with physical and mental health conditions) and those eligible for parole, Temporary Protected Status (TPS), or other protections. We ask that you take action to release him from detention. People can and should navigate the immigration process in their communities, with the support of loved ones and legal support.
The goal is to rein in Donald Trump as much as possible, the letter concludes.
“Now is the time to take decisive action to prevent ruin for millions of people and avoid handing over the keys to an expanded and inhumane system of detention and deportation to the next president.” The letter concludes.
Donald Trump has promised to launch a massive repatriation program, but these groups are trying to put as many obstacles in the way of Trump's efforts while he still has obedient operatives in the White House. I'm thinking of putting things there.
