Pro-Zohran Mamdani group aims to enlist thousands to DSA following mayoral election win

Seeking supporters!

A new advocacy organization is aiming to draw in fans of Zoran Mamdani’s spending policies, working to bolster the New York chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA).

The initiative, dubbed “Our Time for an Affordable NY,” could potentially increase the DSA’s membership significantly.

“We’ve engaged over 100,000 volunteers throughout this campaign and want as many as possible to sign up for DSA,” stated Jeremy Freeman, the group’s executive director, during a DSA meeting captured in a leaked audio after last week’s election.

“If you’re listening and you’re not part of DSA, now’s the time to join,” Freeman urged, according to the recording shared by the media.

The DSA boasts around 12,000 members locally, with over 80,000 across the country.

Mamdani’s campaign promoted its impressive volunteer force, indicating these supporters could greatly enhance the DSA’s numbers if recruitment goes well.

Freeman spoke at a gathering to discuss the new advocacy group.

“This organization aims to keep our volunteers engaged, active, and connected to affordable housing,” Freeman highlighted during the meeting, emphasizing ongoing collaboration with DSA.

Every executive at Our Time is also a member of DSA.

For several years, NYC-DSA has advocated for higher taxes on wealthy residents and corporations to fund essential services, including housing and public transit.

Mamdani has suggested increasing taxes on billionaires and large corporations to provide free childcare and expand public transport, alongside initiatives to develop more affordable housing. He’s also urged the Rent Guidelines Committee to consider rent freezes for regulated apartments.

“I’ve talked extensively with DSA leaders, especially on the topic of taxing the wealthy, to ensure we’re aligned and working together,” Freeman mentioned on the Zoom call.

“We have more plans ahead as we refine our campaigns focused on transportation, childcare, and housing. We’ll share more on how people can contribute,” he added.

The Our Time webpage stated that the movement for affordable living in NYC is “just beginning.”

“Despite opposition from billionaires, over 100,000 volunteers played a crucial role in this election, and they want to build on that momentum,” the site noted. “Our Time can facilitate ongoing engagement for those looking for a lasting political community.”

DSA has been facing challenges as the local Democratic Party structure appears ineffective after a disappointing election cycle. Many Democratic leaders and unions backed former governor Andrew Cuomo during the primary.

DSA was the first significant organization to endorse Mamdani during his primary candidacy, marking a landslide victory that carried through to the general election.

Mamdani expressed that he wouldn’t have pursued the mayoral position without DSA’s support.

He commented at a Somos press event in Puerto Rico, suggesting that while he’s not directly involved with Our Time, he supports grassroots movements that advance their goals.

Interestingly, some see Mamdani’s DSA affiliation as a challenge to the traditional Democratic Party instead of a strength.

“Anyone who thinks DSA is merely assisting Democrats needs a reality check,” remarked Hank Sheinkopf, who has advised notable political figures.

“The intention is to build a strong voter base and reshape power dynamics, not simply to help the Democratic Party,” he added.

A prominent Democratic supporter of Mamdani has expressed concerns that the DSA might overreach, which could hinder the passage of Mamdani’s initiatives.

The DSA could significantly influence the upcoming midterm elections, jeopardizing prospects for incumbents like Gov. Kathy Hochul.

“We need to be cautious. There’s a tough race ahead for the governor, and we need to focus on winning back the House,” a source remarked confidentially.

Mamdani stirred controversy by publicly stating he voted for the Working Families Party instead of the Democratic line, prompting concerns among party loyalists.

“Running under the Democratic banner got you here. A campaign under the Working Families Party would not have seen this result,” the official concluded.
