Michigan Sheriff Seeks Accountability After Violent Carjacking

A Michigan sheriff is calling for answers following a brutal carjacking incident in which a probationary suspect nearly killed a woman.

This past Tuesday, a woman in her 40s was leaving a Panera Bread in Orion Township, located about 45 minutes northwest of Detroit, when a man approached her. He shot her in the hip, snatched her car keys, and drove off.

“She’s lucky to be alive,” the sheriff stated.

Shortly after the incident, law enforcement observed the stolen vehicle through a license plate reader. Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard revealed that the suspect crashed the car while trying to escape on foot but was eventually caught.

The suspect has been identified as Mauriel Hahn, 25, from Ann Arbor. Hahn faces multiple charges, including carjacking and assault with intent to murder, among others.

Bouchard criticized the leniency of the justice system, noting that Hahn was previously convicted of a violent felony in late 2024, during which he allegedly assaulted and almost sexually assaulted a young woman by suffocating her with a plastic bag.

Despite such a severe past incident, Hahn had only received a two-year suspended sentence, which Bouchard finds deeply troubling. “He should not have been on the street,” he remarked.

According to Bouchard, the charges initially brought against Hahn were less severe than they should have been. “Some prosecutors just have to do their job,” he expressed, clearly frustrated.

In response, the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office stated that the judgment was consistent with Michigan’s sentencing guidelines, leaving little room for reduced charges in the case.

“We empathize with the victims of this horrific crime,” the office said, also commending law enforcement for their swift response.

The carjacking victim is reportedly expected to recover but has lost significant blood, noted Bouchard.

In light of the recent events, he mentioned plans to coordinate with federal prosecutors to ensure that appropriate justice is served. “We’ll do everything we can to get him behind bars,” he added.

Hahn is set to face arraignment on Friday at the 52-3 District Court in Rochester Hills.
