Remembering “Produce Pete”

The well-known NBC New York figure, known affectionately as “Produce Pete,” has passed away at 80 years old.

“We share the sad news from the NBC New York family… Producer Pete has died at 80. His kindness and passion for his work will be greatly missed,” noted Stephen Bogner, WNBC’s editor-in-chief, on social media.

Peter Napolitano, a beloved grocer from Bergenfield, New Jersey, had been sharing tips about fruits and vegetables on the Saturday edition of “Weekend Today in New York” for over three decades.

Napolitano often reminisced about his childhood days selling produce in Inglewood, having helped his father with their family store, Napolitano’s Produce. His small shop evolved into a favorite destination for locals, serving them for more than half a century.

The exact cause of his passing is still unclear.

“I come from an immigrant background. My father came from Italy with no formal education. I was fortunate that someone noticed me in my store and gave me a chance on a local show 35 years ago,” he mentioned in a 2025 appearance on “TODAY.”

Known for his catchphrase, “If you eat right, you can live right!” Napolitano also authored several books, including “They Call Me Produce Pete,” published in 2023, chronicling his journey pursuing the American Dream.

Additionally, he hosted cooking classes at various venues, like D’Agostino’s and Macy’s, and spoke passionately about healthy eating at numerous schools across the area.

Amy Morris, senior vice president of news for NBC 4 New York, remarked, “For over 30 years, WNBC viewers tuned in to see Produce Pete share his fruit and veggie recommendations and cooking tips.” She added that he was adored by viewers, evident from the way they engaged with him at health expos and farmers markets in New Jersey, where he always seemed at ease.

He leaves behind his wife, Bette, whom he met in their teenage years, along with two children and seven grandchildren.
