Controversy Surrounding University of Pennsylvania Professor
A professor at the University of Pennsylvania has sparked considerable debate following his derogatory comments about Charlie Kirk shortly after Kirk’s murder. This situation has led to criticism of the university for allegedly not taking political violence seriously.
Michael Mann, who is a climate scientist and the vice provost for climate science, policy, and action, announced on his website last week that he would be stepping down from his position due to his advocacy work related to science policy.
This announcement came about two weeks after Mann’s inflammatory remarks. Following the tragic event, he engaged in a firestorm of controversy by retweeting various posts that criticized Kirk, leading to calls for Kirk’s removal from office.
Despite his self-imposed sanctions, Mann is still a tenured faculty member at the university, raising questions about what, if any, repercussions have been imposed by Penn regarding his criticisms of Kirk, a prominent figure in academia listed on the university’s website.
Job Loss for Administrator Who Called Kirk’s Death “Fair”
Mann continues to be identified on the school’s website as the director of the Penn Center for Science, Sustainability, and Media. Steve Milloy, a senior policy fellow at the Institute for Energy and Environmental Law and a former member of Trump’s EPA transition team, expressed confusion about why the university continues to employ Mann, suggesting that if the institution was behind Mann’s decision to step down from his provost role, then perhaps it should have also terminated his academic appointment.
After Kirk’s death, Mann’s provocative actions included sharing multiple posts that were critical of Kirk, including one that belittled conservative activist Ezra Klein’s column in the New York Times. In one retweet, Mann accused Kirk of “whitewashing” his legacy, while he also posted a message about Utah Governor Spencer Cox expressing his thoughts and prayers during previous press conferences, linking it to gun control advocacy.
Experts Warn About Left-Wing Reactions to Kirk’s Death
Mann later tried to clarify his actions, stating that he was simply aligned with Klein’s broader criticism of Kirk, but he did express disapproval of the inflammatory language used against Kirk. He acknowledged his oversight and the need to delete certain comments.
Pennsylvania Republican Senator Dave McCormick has demanded “immediate” and “decisive” actions against Mann following the incidents.
Multiple attempts by Fox News Digital to obtain comments from the University of Pennsylvania regarding any disciplinary measures taken against Mann went unanswered.
Alongside the controversy, Mann has been promoting his new book, “Science Under Siege,” which addresses a so-called “dangerous anti-science movement” prevalent on social media.
On September 30th, Mann participated in a ceremony in China where he received an honorary degree from the Hong Kong University of Education, expressing delight in the experience.
Not one to shy away from contentious topics, Mann had previously suggested in a tweet that the Republican Party should be “destroyed” and remarked that the country could find itself in “Second Amendment territory” after perceived threats emerged involving Trump.
As of now, Mann has not responded to inquiries from Fox News Digital regarding these ongoing issues.
