Paul Dans, director of the Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025, resigned amid backlash from former President Donald Trump, who Democrats have accused of conspiring with the proposal.

The Project 2025 proposal was released in April 2022 and is essentially a 900-page conservative playbook for a second Trump term. But Trump has had no involvement with the plan and has argued that many of its proposals would not be acceptable to his administration.

President Trump disavowed Project 2025 after Democratic Party officials linked it to the conservative blueprint. The Democrats’ main argument is that Project 2025 is an “anti-democracy, pro-fascism” manual.

Meanwhile, Trump campaign leaders Suzie Wiles and Chris LaCivita issued a joint statement in response to the news of Dans’ departure from the project.

“The report of Project 2025’s demise is very welcome and should serve as a warning to any individuals or groups who attempt to misrepresent their influence on President Trump and his campaign — it will not end well for you,” campaign leaders said.

Additionally, Harris’ campaign manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez said in a statement on Tuesday, “Project 2025 is on the ballot because Donald Trump is on the ballot. It is an agenda written by his allies that Donald Trump is trying to impose on our country.”

Trump previously distanced himself from the project in a personal statement on Truth Social.

“I know nothing about Project 2025. I don’t know who is behind it. I don’t agree with some of the things they say, some of the things they say are just ridiculous and terrible. I wish them the best of luck in whatever they do, but I have nothing to do with them,” Trump said.

Trump also made clear his distance from the plan after Heritage Foundation president Kevin Roberts spoke about a “Second American Revolution” on Steve Bannon’s radio show, sparking backlash from Democrats and fueling left-wing conspiracy theories that Trump’s reelection would bring about fascism.

Shortly thereafter, Roberts sought to expand on his comments on the show in an email on Wednesday, explaining that “people are waging a second American revolution to take back power from elites and tyrannical bureaucrats.”

“These patriots are committed to creating a peaceful revolution at the ballot box,” Roberts said. “Unfortunately, the left has a long history of violence, so it’s up to them to allow for a peaceful transfer of power.”

Roberts’ announcement came on Monday, when he also confirmed Dans was leaving the project.

“Under Paul Dans’ leadership, Project 2025 has achieved exactly what it set out to do – bring together over 110 leading conservative organisations to forge a unified conservative vision and drive to devolve power from the unelected administrative state and return it to the people. This tool has been built for future administrations to use.”
