Target’s Controversial Fall Fashion Ad

There’s something about a cozy scarf that just says “fall,” right? But Target seems to be stepping into murky waters with its latest campaign, which has inadvertently drawn attention to some radical literature.

The retailer, already navigating its fair share of challenges, has reportedly included Karl Marx’s iconic text, “Das Kapital,” in its fall fashion ads aimed at urban women. This move has raised eyebrows, especially since the company is still trying to recover from significant backlash.

In a recent ad spotted on Instagram, a new translation of Marx’s influential work popped up alongside more typical fashion items—like knee-high boots, a stylish faux-leather midi skirt, and chic sandals. It’s almost like they’ve mixed high fashion with a strong political statement.

A Post employee stumbled upon this while scrolling her Instagram feed after not shopping at Target for quite some time. She paused at a midweight gray scarf, curious about their featured items. But then, right in the middle of the fashion selection, there it was: an offer to purchase “Das Kapital.” Quite the surprise, I’d say.

“Das Kapital – Written by Karl Marx (Paperback) New arrivals are here! Find the latest essentials at Target,” the ad claimed. I mean, was it just me, or did that seem oddly juxtaposed?

One employee was puzzled by the placement of this book, considering its bleak message on capitalism sandwiched between sought-after accessories and clothing. It led her to question, “What did I do to deserve seeing this?” Perhaps even a bit of irony there?

After digging a little, she found out that “Das Kapital” could indeed be purchased directly from Target, as well as other major retailers. Not exactly the typical fare you’d expect when browsing fashion items.

Target has dealt with its share of criticism in recent years, especially with controversies surrounding previous product lines, including its 2023 Pride collection. Activists had gone after the retailer for offering children’s clothing with LGBTQ+ themes, among other things.

The aftermath of those controversies? Target reported its first sales decline in six years, attributing it to customers reacting negatively to their marketing choices.

In an attempt to reshape its public image, Target announced that it would be scrapping its diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives. Those decisions come amidst rising concerns over shoplifting and safety, which led to the closing of several locations last year.

Additionally, the backlash has affected investor sentiment, with a steep drop in stock prices after the announcement of a new CEO who, I think, they hoped would turn things around.

Marx’s “Das Kapital” critiques capitalism fiercely, likening capitalists to vampires sucking the life from workers, and has been a pivotal text for revolutionary movements worldwide. While the book itself has been adapted throughout history, its inclusion in a lifestyle ad takes a rather unusual approach.

Despite reaching out, Target has yet to respond regarding this peculiar melding of politics and fashion. With all this in mind, one can’t help but wonder how consumers will react next.
