Prosecution Claims Actor ‘Played Make-Believe with a Real Gun’ on ‘Rust’ Set

Prosecutors in Alec Baldwin’s manslaughter trial have argued that the actor was “playing around” with a gun on set before cinematographer Halina Hutchins was shot and killed.

In opening statements this week, the defense portrayed Baldwin as an actor who had the misfortune to then find himself in a situation that led to his tragic death. The defense argued that Baldwin trusted his staff and had no reason to believe he was given a loaded gun before shooting Hutchins. Baldwin has previously maintained his innocence and that he never pulled the trigger. But the prosecution took a different view, arguing that Baldwin “played with a real gun” and “violated basic rules of firearms safety.”

“Although it was a movie set, it was a real workplace for many people,” said prosecutor Erlinda Johnson. She said in her opening statement:“You’ll hear that this place has a tight budget and some of the people they hire are inexperienced.”

Baldwin’s lawyer, Alex Spiro, argued that Baldwin was “acting as generations have done and the safeguards failed them all,” noting that live ammunition should never have been near a movie set and that the responsibility lay entirely with Baldwin. rust Armsman Hannah Gutierrez Reed was convicted of manslaughter earlier this year.

“Alec Baldwin committed no crime,” Spiro said. “He was just an actor working with props.”

“There are no real bullets on a movie set,” he added.

The FBI’s subsequent analysis of the firearm concluded that “the trigger of the evidence revolver had to be fully pulled or depressed to release the hammer from a fully cocked or cocked position.”

The prosecution, citing the FBI investigation, focused on arguing that Baldwin did not pull the trigger. The FBI destroyed some of the weapons. – This prevents it from being used for further analysis.” BBC News.
