In 1994, South Carolina prosecutors convicted Susan Smith for the tragic murder of her two young sons, Michael and Alexander. Tommy Pope, the prosecutor who handled Smith’s case and is now a state legislator, mentioned that she could be eligible for parole again in 2026. She was previously denied in 2024. Pope shared his perspective on the situation recently, emphasizing that, in his opinion, Smith should remain incarcerated as punishment for her actions. “She has children now, but that doesn’t change what she did,” he remarked during a talk at a recent event.
The story surrounding Smith has always been fraught with complexities. Initially, after her arrest, she claimed that a group of Black men had taken her car with the children inside, triggering a widespread manhunt that turned into a painful spectacle. Pope recalls the shock when the truth emerged, saying, “At first, I thought she was pretending someone had taken them to hide something else — maybe issues with her ex-husband.”

She reportedly watched the car sink into the lake, and there were prosecutors who argued she should face the death penalty. Both Pope and Smith’s ex-husband attended her last parole hearing, expressing their strong opposition to her release.

Reflecting on Smith’s mindset, Pope commented, “She’s always trying to spin the narrative to make it seem like it’s not her fault, as if she’s the victim in all this.” This perspective highlights the ongoing debate surrounding her case and the broader implications of her actions.
