Protests erupted in New York City on Thursday over a scheduled meeting between Mayor Eric Adams (D) and President-elect Donald Trump's incoming border czar, Tom Homan.
Mr. Adams announced last week that he would meet with Mr. Homan to discuss the Trump administration's mass deportation plans, which many Democratic leaders have vowed to block.
“Our message is that New York City is a sanctuary city.”
Adams has come under fire for being vague about his position on the city's conservation policy. Over the past year, the mayor has advocated reducing these policies to facilitate the removal of criminal illegal aliens from the city.
Adams doesn't support President Trump's promise of mass deportation, but he looks forward to working with the incoming administration to deport criminals and make New York City safer for residents.
His departure from the party line has drawn scrutiny from fellow Democrats. Either way, Adams appears to be steadfast in his commitment to working with federal immigration authorities to weed out criminals. He has repeatedly called on the left to “cancel” his position.
According to sources, immigrants gathered outside City Hall to protest ahead of the afternoon meeting between Adams and Homan. video Photographed by FreedomNews.tv.
One demonstrator held a sign in Spanish that read, “New York City says 'no' to Tom Homan.”
Another sign read, “Mayor Adams, Reject Homan. Unite New York City Families!”
The third sentence reads, “Say 'no' to Homan: Family Separation Emperor!”
“We're here to condemn the meeting that's taking place between Tom Homan and Mayor Adams. Instead, we're here to condemn the meeting between Tom Homan and Mayor Adams. “I'm here to lead the city and call on it to focus on protecting immigrant New Yorkers from crime.” The next Trump administration. ”
“First of all, we want him [Adams] “Stop coddling the Trump administration,” she said.
Tovar said Adams should focus on “reassuring” immigrants in New York City that Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents will not be allowed in the city.
She also called on Adams to not only support the city's current protection policies, but also expand protections for undocumented immigrants.
Another demonstrator, Nesar Bhuyan, said: WCBS TV“Our message is that New York City is a sanctuary city. So we're here to protect our immigrant communities.”
Former New York State Representative Michael Blake (D) also participated in Thursday's protest. He is one of several candidates who have announced their intention to challenge Adams in the next mayoral election.
a video Photos shared on social media showed Blake addressing protesters.
“If I become the next mayor, let me be clear: everyone has a seat at the table,” he said. “We love you. We'll protect you. We'll have your back. We're not going to leave our immigrant families. It's wrong.”
A meeting between Adams and Homan is scheduled for 1 p.m. local time, and Homan is expected to address reporters around 3 p.m.
