Challenges for the Box Office of Scream 7
On Thursday, the latest installment of the franchise, Scream 7, faced a significant hurdle despite achieving a record-breaking opening day.
The controversy began when Melissa Barrera was dismissed from the film due to anti-Semitic comments she made. In November 2023, Barrera posted derogatory remarks about Israel on social media, expressing a viewpoint that drew heavy criticism.
In her post, she claimed, “Gaza is now being treated like a concentration camp. You’ve driven everyone into a corner, you’ve got nowhere to go, you’ve got no electricity, you’ve got no water… People haven’t learned anything from our history. And just like in our history, they’re still sitting back and watching everything happen. This is genocide, it’s ethnic cleansing.”
Following her dismissal, co-star Jenna Ortega also exited the project, citing scheduling conflicts, which was followed by the departure of the director.
Kevin Williamson, a key figure in the Scream franchise, takes on co-writing and directing roles for this latest movie. Original stars like Neve Campbell and Courteney Cox are set to return, which adds a nostalgic touch.
However, anti-Israel protests have targeted the film, resulting in activists attempting to sabotage its success through social media and public demonstrations.
The outcome so far? A potential flop at the box office. Paramount, which recently acquired Warner Bros. Discovery, reported spending $7.5 million for previews of Scream 7, marking a record for the franchise.
Prior installments had set records as well, including Scream VI, which brought in $5.7 million in previews and a three-day domestic opening of $44.4 million. Paramount has yet to comment on the developments surrounding the film.
Even with the challenges, Scream 7 stands as a remarkable success in its own right, thriving within a beloved franchise that’s managed to retain its loyal fanbase over the decades. Unlike franchises such as Star Wars or Indiana Jones, which have seen their reputations tarnished, Scream remains committed to its roots and characters, offering fans a refreshing escape without unnecessary changes from producers.
