Proton Launches Google Docs Rival with Enhanced Privacy Features

Privacy-focused email and VPN company Proton has announced Proton Docs, a privacy-focused document editor that aims to offer users a secure alternative to Google Docs.

The Verge Report Proton, the company known for its encrypted email service, has expanded its privacy-focused suite of tools with the release of Proton Docs. Similar in interface and functionality to Google Docs, the new product is designed to appeal to users who prioritize data privacy and security in their digital workspace.

The introduction of Proton Docs marks an important step in the company’s evolution from a simple email client to a comprehensive suite of work tools. This latest addition allows Proton to offer a range of services, including a calendar, file storage system and password manager, positioning it as a strong competitor to existing platforms like Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.

Currently available as part of Proton Drive, Proton Docs comes with many of the features users have come to expect from a modern document editor, including rich text options, real-time collaborative editing, multimedia support, etc. The initial release is optimized for desktop web browsers, but Proton has confirmed plans to expand to other platforms in the future.

What sets Proton Docs apart from its competitors is its unwavering commitment to user privacy and security. The company claims that every aspect of the document creation process, including keystrokes and cursor movements, is protected in real time with end-to-end encryption. This level of security is especially appealing at a time when concerns about data privacy and the use of user-generated content to train AI are at an all-time high.

Proton’s public relations manager, Will Moore, highlighted the company’s ambitious plans for the future, stating, “Everything Google has, is on our roadmap.” This declaration suggests that Proton is not content to simply provide a basic alternative, but aims to match and possibly surpass the capabilities offered by industry leaders.

The launch of Proton Docs comes on the heels of the company’s acquisition of Standard Notes in April, which clearly influenced the development of this new product, although Proton has assured users that Standard Notes will continue to exist as a standalone entity and that Proton Docs will borrow some of its features.
