Publisher alerts about anti-press efforts and false information.

The publisher of The New York Times has expressed concerns about a rising trend in misinformation that is affecting public discussions, along with a growing hostility towards journalism from global leaders.

“This anti-press playbook is actively being employed in our country. It’s a particularly challenging time for American media,” said Times Publisher A.G. Sulzberger during a speech at Notre Dame.

Sulzberger noted that the financial model that once supported traditional reporting is in decline.

“In essence, I’ve observed that a small, financially strained profession is now facing significant threats to its rights and credibility,” he stated.

He commented on the behavior of former President Trump, describing him as “unusually aggressive in his anti-press rhetoric,” and noted that his supporters are likewise targeting journalists.

“Their aim is not only to intimidate journalists but also to cultivate a public animosity towards media and foster distrust,” he remarked.

Trump and his allies have consistently mocked mainstream media, including the Times, while promoting alternative media platforms that align with their views.

Additionally, Trump has suggested using federal regulatory authority to exert pressure on major broadcasting companies and media organizations.

Sulzberger pointed out that while these actions are framed as broadening perspectives, they essentially seek to replace critical inquiries with ones that support specific narratives, undermining independent journalism. “Engaging with the news is a fundamental aspect of citizenship. Now is not the time to withdraw,” he emphasized.
