Puka Nacua has checked into a rehabilitation facility following an incident in which he allegedly bit a woman while intoxicated on New Year’s Eve.
His lawyer, Levi McCathern, confirmed on Wednesday that Nacua has been receiving treatment at a high-end center in Malibu.
McCathern noted that Nacua’s decision to seek help wasn’t purely a reaction to a recent lawsuit by Madison Atiabi. He mentioned, however, that the situation was likely influenced by various reports surrounding it.
“He’s been there for a while now, even before the allegations became public, and he’ll likely continue for some time,” McCathern stated.
The attorney emphasized that Nacua’s aim is to “enhance his overall behavior in all facets of his life.”
“I’m really proud of the steps he’s taken this offseason,” McCathern added.
Photos show Nacua visiting the treatment center twice in March, dressed in relaxed clothing like oversized shirts and gym shorts. He seemed in good spirits, often smiling and greeting visitors.
This particular rehab facility specializes in helping individuals with substance abuse issues, along with mental health challenges.
McCathern relayed that he spoke to Nacua recently and described him as doing well. “I think he’s performing admirably. I’m eager to see his progression next year; he’s already shown great promise, and I believe he can improve even more.”
Throughout the offseason, Nacua has made headlines for a couple of alcohol-related incidents.
One such incident occurred during Super Bowl week in San Francisco when he was filmed appearing unsteady while celebrating at a party.
Another incident was on March 24, when Atiabi sought a restraining order against him, alleging that he bit her during a night out in Los Angeles on December 31.
According to Atiabi, 24, in her filing, Nacua had been drinking during dinner and made her feel uncomfortable throughout the evening. She also claimed he made offensive comments and allegedly “attacked” her in a vehicle heading to another location.
Atiabi stated that Nacua’s bite was severe enough to break the skin and left a visible mark, resulting in considerable pain.
On March 25, she filed a lawsuit against him concerning the encounter. Her lawyer mentioned that they were dropping the restraining order request to focus on the lawsuit itself.
McCathern denied any anti-Semitic remarks made by Nacua but acknowledged that there were harsh words exchanged. He characterized the incident as mutual “horseplay.”
“They seem to be exaggerating this situation in hopes of financial gain,” he remarked last week regarding Atiabi and her legal team. “In the end, they might find themselves on the losing side.”
Meanwhile, the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office has indicated that they are looking into Atiabi’s claims.
