Russian President Vladimir Putin is due to visit North Korea and leader Kim Jong Un this week as the two countries seek to strengthen ties amid the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Putin is due to visit on Tuesday and Wednesday, according to Russian and North Korean state media.

This follows an invitation from the North Korean leader following Putin’s visit to Russia in September.

The United States has accused the two leaders of cooperating on weapons and technology transfer, alleging that North Korea is providing Russia with artillery shells for use in Ukraine in exchange for key technologies that will help it develop missiles and space satellites.

And last week, Kim Jong Un praised the future of “meaningful relations and close friendship” between the two countries in a message to Putin to mark Russia’s National Day on June 12.Number.

“Our people extend their full support and solidarity to the successful activities of the Russian army and people,” Kim said, according to the Rodong Sinmun newspaper.

Putin also said Russia wanted to build cooperation with North Korea “in all possible fields,” according to Russian state media.

Russia has relied on other countries to supply its forces in Ukraine, with Iran providing explosive drones and the United States saying China provided technology to help Russia develop assets for use in war.

Ties between Moscow and North Korea weakened after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. Kim Jong Un first met Putin in 2019 in the eastern Russian port city of Vladivostok.
