Qatari defense and maritime security officials have confirmed that a fuel oil tanker was targeted by an Iranian missile early Wednesday morning.
The vessel, known as Aqua 1, was attacked while it was navigating Qatar’s northern territorial waters, approximately 17 nautical miles from the Ras Laffan industrial area.
According to the Ministry of Defense in Qatar, three cruise missiles were launched from Iran; two were intercepted, but the third successfully struck the ship above the waterline.
Qatar Energy, the company that chartered the Aqua 1, reported no injuries among the crew, and noted that there were no environmental repercussions or oil spills resulting from the incident.
The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) mentioned that while one missile caused a small fire that was quickly controlled, a second missile was found unexploded in the engine room of the tanker.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) later accepted responsibility, asserting that the tanker was attacked due to its alleged connections to Israel. Iranian state media cited the Revolutionary Guards, stating, “Aqua-1 was precisely targeted in the central region of the Persian Gulf during a missile engagement.”
This incident comes amid escalating tensions in the Persian Gulf, which included an attack on a Kuwaiti tanker at its port in Dubai just a day earlier, along with a prior attack on a Qatari LNG production site that disrupted regional energy exports significantly.
According to reports, Tehran has lost 17% of Qatar’s liquefied natural gas export capacity.
Following the attacks in Iran, the regime retaliated against the United States, targeting Al Udeid airbase in Doha, which is the largest U.S. military facility in the region.
The strike is occurring against a backdrop of rising war risk premiums in the maritime industry, which have increased by as much as 10%, prompting some regional trade to shift to Pakistan’s ports. Analysts indicate that the UK, along with a coalition of 35 nations, is searching for diplomatic avenues to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, though Iran appears to maintain a firm stance.
