Jake Retzlaff Withdraws from BYU Amid Controversy
Former BYU quarterback Jake Retzlaff has opened up about his choice to leave college, following reports of a seven-game suspension for violating the school’s honor code.
Facing serious rape allegations and acknowledging premarital sex during a court appearance, Retzlaff appears unlikely to transfer to another school through the portal, as stated by a recent report.
The 22-year-old intends to enroll at a new institution instead, as he feels he hasn’t made a significant impact during his time at BYU.
“After many prayers, contemplation, and conversations with trusted individuals, I made the difficult decision to officially withdraw from BYU and leave the football program,” he shared in an Instagram post.
Retzlaff expressed that BYU meant more to him than just the sport, noting it was a place for personal growth, mentally and physically. He conveyed gratitude to his teammates, staff, and fans for their support throughout his journey.
This suspension comes amid a lawsuit in which he alleged that he was raped, strangled, and bitten during a November 2023 incident in Provo, Utah. The lawsuit was reportedly dismissed on June 30 after both parties agreed to do so.
Retzlaff acknowledged in court that he had violated the honor code through premarital relations.
In response to Retzlaff’s departure, BYU issued a statement expressing appreciation for his time at the university, stating they respect his decision to withdraw.
Despite the challenges he’s faced, Retzlaff led the Cougars to an impressive 11-2 record in 2024, throwing for nearly 3,000 yards and garnering 20 touchdowns.
“As I turn the page, I’m eager to start this next chapter,” he remarked. “My journey is far from over, and I’m more motivated than ever to chase my dreams.”
